School Lunch Challenge-March 28th

school lunch

Join us for a fun, educational event engaging the Athens community with the past, present, and future of the National School Lunch Program! Four teams drawn from local restaurants and non-profit organizations, and advised by members of the Clarke County School District (CCSD) nutrition staff, will compete to create dishes in accordance with USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program. Each team will create a school lunch plate that will appeal to a K-12 audience. Event attendees will be invited to a sample size serving of each plate created and will vote for a crowd favorite in each category. A panel of student judges drawn from CCSD schools will vote to determine an overall winner; the winning team’s plate will be incorporated into the CCSD school lunch menu during the 2015-2016 school year.

Each team has been assigned to represent one of the four local middle schools, as a way to get students excited about the competition! Our teams are:

Team 1: Heirloom Cafe & Fresh Market/Hilsman Middle School

Team 2: The National/Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School

Team 3: Athens Land Trust/W.R. Coile Middle School

Team 4: Goodie Two Shoes/Clarke Middle School

This event is sponsored by the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, the Clarke County School District, the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Athens Land Trust, and Athens Farm to School.
