Even at the young age of 3 1/2, Kalika Haddad has been a regular fixture at Heirloom. Her parents have been bringing her here since she was but a tiny baby, and we have watched her grow bigger and sweeter on each visit. Kalika has been diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare non-inherited genetic neurological disorder.

Rett syndrome leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of life: ability to speak, walk, eat, and breathe easily. The hallmark of Rett syndrome is near constant repetitive hand movements while awake. Cognitive assessment in children with Rett syndrome is complicated, but we know that they understand far more than they can communicate to us, evidenced by their bright and attentive eyes, and their ability to express a wide spectrum of moods and emotions.

Kalika’s father, Jonathan, asked if we could host an event to benefit research about Rett Syndrome and we jumped at a chance to throw Kalika a party. The Haddad’s will be holding court at Heirloom during dinner service on October 10th. We will have several of their favorite dishes on special, we will have Kalika’s favorite songs playing throughout the night, and we will even feature a purple cocktail in their honor. 10% of sales from the evening and 10% of sales from our highball cocktails all month will go to benefit RettSyndrome.org and Rett Syndrome Research Trust.
