We are pleased to announce our second Meet The Maker Dinner in partnership with J’s Bottle Shop. Alejandro Ortiz is bringing his old friend Marc Rafael to Athens so we can taste his wines, pick his brain, and make merry with him. You might find it strange that a California wine producer is called Rafael et Fils, but the name homages his parents who raised him in France and then came to the States, buying land in Napa Valley in the 1970’s. The vineyards and winery as they exist today were started in 1996, and Rafael focuses on truly evoking place through his wines. He prides himself in making single vineyard, single varietal wines, and it shows in your ability to read the story of the vintage year on your tongue as the flavors swirl around your mouth.
While all of the wines on this tasting list are totally crushable for the glorious weather to come in the next month or two, they are all also wines geared to surprise and delight, ranging from less common varietals to less common growing regions to unexpected flavor profiles from familiar grapes. While some of the wines may be unexpected, they have several things in common: their origin on small family owned vineyards, the use of sustainable growing and production methods, and the fact that they all scream spring.
Follow Alejandro Ortiz of J’s Bottle Shop as he leads you along the winding path of your imaginary future garden party, wills the flowers to bloom, and wards off any sign of a late freeze. $20 gets you tastes of 5 wines, 3 with paired snacks, and 10% off your meal if you stay for dinner. The party starts at 6:00. Call 706-354-7901 to reserve your spot.
